The storied history and tradition of Steelers football is like no other in the history of professional football…

Now that statement you just read is coming from someone who was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH — and is a lifelong Cincinnati Bengals fan. But, when your rooting for a team that has had only ONE WINNING season in the last 17 years — You have to have another team to cheer for. Now that may seem strange to be both a Steelers football fan and a Bengals fan since they are both intimate rivals but I love both teams. So what exactly is it that makes me such a Big Steelers football fan?

Well for one thing it is the tradition. The Steelers have developed such a great winning tradition over the years with five Super Bowl trophies to prove it. The other reason is the mystique. The Pittsburgh Steelers have a certain mystique about them… similiar to that of the Dallas Cowboys. Another thing that I admire about the Steelers is the ownership led by the Rooney family.

The Rooney family developed a “system” or a blueprint for putting together a football team. This system starts on top with ownership and works its way down to the GM, the scouts, the coaching staff and finally to the players. And this system that the ownership put in place years ago has branded them an identity that everyone now knows is Steelers football.

And the amazing thing about this system that the Rooney family has put in place is that they know exactly the type of football player they want. The scouting department knows exactly what kind of players to scout that fits into their system. And there is not a better way to exemplify that point than the great tradition of linebackers that the Steelers has produced over the years.

I mean if Penn St is linebacker U. — Then the Steelers are a linebacker factory… Just take at the number of great linebackers they have produced over the years…

Jack Lambert (8 Pro Bowls), Jack Ham (8 Pro Bowls), Andy Russell (7 Pro Bowls), Greg Lloyd (5 Pro Bowls), Levon Kirkland (2 Pro Bowls)… Chad Brown, Keven Greene, Jason Gildon, Kendrell Bell, Joey Porter, James Farrior… And now the latest and greatest that they have produced at the linebacker position is 2008 Pro Bowler James Harrison.

So who is next? I don’t know but I am sure that they are grooming the next prototypical linebacker. And this example of the great linebackers they have produced over the years is yet another reason why I admire this franchise.

And this leads me into my final point. What seperates Steelers football from an anemic and losing franchise like my Cincinnati Bengals…

That the Steelers besides having a great system in place — ownership, management, scouting — they also have an idendity. When you play the Steelers on Sunday afternoon you know what to expect. You know that they will play tough, hard nosed defense number one… and number two they will run the ball down your throat…

That is their identity, that is part of their tradition and mystique and that my friends is Steelers football!
